Me Here You There

Me Here You There

2008

This video installation deals with communication, connection over distance and a closeness of minds.
We live in New York and Cape Town (respectively) and communicate most commonly via Google’s instant messenger service Gchat. This service allows us to converse freely and without the pressure of a long distance phone call’s expense and urgency. The shortcoming with this method of connection is its emotional dislocation, words become dry and expressionless when written, not spoken. In this piece, we speak the emotional phrases from one year’s worth of Gchat conversations, breathing life into our own words. Only our mouths and ears are seen, speaking and listening, calling out and receiving.
